Wyvern Savings and Loans last month held a celebration evening to mark twenty years of a credit union in Dorset and Somerset. The anniversary of the credit union, which operates in Gillingham and Shaftesbury, was celebrated at the Town Hall in Dorchester on 5 July from 6pm to 8pm and opened by the mayor of Dorchester, Richard Biggs, who is himself a member.

‘During those twenty years we have provided a place for safe savings and affordable loans for local people. We have made over 7,600 individual loans and lent out in excess of £5,000,000, with vast savings in interest paid as compared to doorstep lenders and payday loans,’ says marketing manager Dave Martin. ‘These savings have helped our members have better lives; savings that are spent in our local community.’

Local opening times: Gillingham: Community Office, 1 Chantry Fields, Gillingham (next to the library) Wednesday 12pm – 2pm, Saturday 10am – 12 noon.
Shaftesbury Shaftesbury Library, Bell Street, Thursday 11am – 1pm.
