The well-known DJ Johnnie Walker and his wife Tiggy last week received a cheque in Shaftesbury for £1,584.17 to go towards the Carers UK charity of which they are joint patrons.

The cheque was handed over by Giles Maling, general manager of The Grosvenor Arms in Shaftesbury where the money was raised at a recent pop quiz fundraising event. ‘We are very grateful to Giles and The Grosvenor Arms and their staff for enabling us to hold the event,’ said Johnnie. ‘It was a good night and everyone who came said they would love to do it again next year.’

Johnnie and Tiggy, who live in Shaftesbury, became joint patrons of the national charity Carers UK, which aims to support the country’s estimated 6.5 million carers, having each had personal experience of caring. Tiggy spent a year caring for Johnnie when he battled against cancer more than 14 years ago and years later Johnnie looked after Tiggy while she overcame breast cancer.

‘We think Carers UK is an absolutely fabulous charity,’ said Tiggy. ‘We feel quite passionate about it.’

The couple also took part in a sponsored charity walk of an un-restored section the Great Wall of China to raise money, and this trek and the quiz have raised a combined total of more than £63,500 for the charity. ‘It was tough and at times frightening  but the views were absolutely heart-stopping and it was a privilege to be there,’ says Tiggy.

Johnnie will also be compering a wine tasting version of ‘Call My Bluff’ at The Grosvenor Arms on 22 February from 6pm to 9pm, with proceeds to go to Carers UK.
