Spring Talks

Following on from the success of their Autumn Talks, The Grosvenor Arms in Shaftesbury has organised Spring Talks, a programme of events on Thursday nights featuring a host of interesting speakers from the fields of psychology, travel, wildlife, fashion and nutrition. The talks begin at 7pm, and tickets are £10 and can be booked in advance here, or on the door.

February 13: The Art of Rest, an evening with Claudia Hammond
Award-winning BBC broadcaster, author and psychology lecturer, Claudia Hammond is the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s All in the Mind and Health Check on the World Service. A Visiting Professor at Sussex University, she is the author of several books. Her most recent The Art of Rest, examines the science behind our struggles to rest and relax. Claudia will be discussing her illuminating new book and the essential importance of rest.

February 27: The Lost Pianos of Siberia, an evening with Sophy Roberts
Sophy Roberts is an award-winning writer and travel journalist based in Dorset. A former editor-at-large for Condé Nast Traveller and special correspondent for Condé Nast Traveler in the US, her work has taken her to remote parts of the world where she has reported on wildlife conservation, threats to eco-systems and fragile cultures. A travel editor for The Economist 1843, and a columnist for FT Weekend and How To Spend It, Sophy will be discussing her first book, the recently published The Lost Pianos of Siberia. This literary work of non-fiction uses musical culture as a way to tell the story of Siberia and the Russian Far East.

March 12: Birds and British Wildlife, an evening with Stephen Moss
Stephen Moss is a leading nature writer, broadcaster and TV producer. He won a BAFTA as producer for BBC Spring Watch. President of Somerset Wildlife Trust, Stephen is a passionate birder, and a lecturer in the MA travel and nature writing at Bath Spa. Stephen will be discussing his books and love of birds and British wildlife.

March 19, How to Make Your Wardrobe Work for You in 2020, an evening with Natasha Musson
Natasha Musson will be inspiring us with fashion advice for 2020 and beyond. She will be giving us tips on how to make your clothes work for you through colour, body shape, capsule wardrobe, style personality, sustainability and creativity. Following a career in TV production, Natasha built her styling business through her philosophy to be creative with what you already have. This resourceful attitude combined with her fashion knowledge, advice on developing a personal look and the importance of buying the right clothes, has established her reputation as a leading stylist.

April 2: Women & Nutrition, an evening with Laura Jane Hughes
Laura Jane Hughes Founder of the Shaftesbury based Pregnancy Food Company, Laura is a Nutritional Therapist specialising in the female body. She will be discussing how we can take back control of our own health and our own bodies! From periods, to fertility, gut health, menopause and everything in between – she will take us on a journey of discovery, empowerment and education.

April 16: Award Winning Writing, an evening with Samantha Harvey
Samantha Harvey is the award-winning author of four novels, including the acclaimed The Western Wind. She will be discussing her works of fiction and non-fiction, including her latest highly praised book The Shapeless Unease, A Year of Not Sleeping. Samantha lives in Bath and is a Reader in creative writing at Bath Spa University.
