Hipp!!Bones in Gillingham.

Hipp!!Bones is a charity run youth club for young people aged 11-25 years with special needs and disabilities – it is based in Gillingham but has members from across Dorset and neighbouring counties.

Hipp!!Bones supports and empowers young people with SEND to achieve their full potential and is hugely important to its members and the community it serves. It provides a safe environment where the young people can meet with friends outside school, socialise and form new friendships and acquire the skills necessary to become more independent as they move into adulthood.

Hipp!!Bones has a calm, friendly atmosphere and is staffed by three trained and experienced staff that provide high quality care and provision. Sessions are varied and interesting and provide opportunities to participate in arts & crafts, cooking and sports activities; and four offsite trips a year. Activities are appropriately differentiated to meet each young person’s needs, sessions are structured giving a sense of security and staff communicate using simple language reinforced with alternative and augmentative communication, visual clues and sign language to meet individual needs.

Post-Covid, the club is thriving again with an average of 17 members with wide ranging needs attending each session. With an increase in the number of members needing 1-1 support, more volunteers are urgently needed to enable the club to continue to run safely and to provide members with the support and encouragement they need to thrive.

You don’t need any particular qualifications or skills to be a volunteer – you just need to be reliable, caring and willing to ‘muck in’ as part of a friendly team at the twice monthly sessions, which take place on Saturday mornings. If you’re not sure whether it’s something you could commit to, you are welcome to go along for a taster session to get a feel of what the club does.

If volunteering at the club isn’t for you, the charity is also looking to recruit new ‘Friends of Hipp!!Bones’ members to support our fundraising team.
