UPDATE 14 January 2022: Gillingham Town Council has been informed by Dorset Council that these repairs will now take place at night, and that the road will be closed on those dates from 7pm to 6am, including Saturday 26 February.

One of Gillingham’s busiest roads is to be closed for daytime traffic for a week in February.

Dorset Council is to close the stretch of Peacemarsh Road below the main roundabout coming into the town near the GPs surgery down to the roundabout near the Co-op.

This busy section of road will be closed from 9am to 4pm from 21 to 25 February but will be open overnight.

Vehicles wanting to travel that way will be diverted via the A 303 between Mere and Wincanton.

‘During the closure periods there will be no on-street parking available. Parking restrictions will be imposed to prevent waiting or parking on the roads stated,’ said a spokesperson for Dorset Council.

They added: ‘Vehicular and pedestrian access will be maintained for residents, however there may be a time where they are asked to wait depending on the current activity on site, there will be a Traffic Management Operative on site to aid traffic.’

The council says that in the ‘current financial climate’ its highways department has to focus its budget on ‘targeting the most damaged sections of road and areas with safety issues’.

The map above shows the stretch of road that will be closed, marked in red, with the diversion in purple.

What is going to happen to access to the GP surgery. Why can’t the work be done at night, it is crazy to shut this road during daytime.
