The new monthly Sunday street market which begins on Sunday 11 October could bring back much-needed life to Gillingham’s High Street, councillors have been told.
Councillor Mike Gould, who is part of the Town Team group that has helped arrange the White Hart Market, told councillors this week: ‘I think it will be a success, it’s got a number of interesting stalls turning up. I think this could be a great event for Gillingham.’
He added: ‘I’m hoping that coffee shops and various traders – if they wish to – will open on Sunday to bring more trade to the High Street. I’m hopeful that this activity will be successful and will capitalise on its success by bringing other traders to the town and bringing life back into the High Street, which is sadly missing at the moment.’
Councillor Val Pothecary said: ‘I want to congratulate Councillor Gould and the Town Team for all their hard work. It’s really exciting to think that we got a proper market.’
Last Monday’s meeting also heard that the organisers of the market, the Anonymous Travelling Market, are holding a Christmas Market in the town on Saturday 12 December.
