The project known as “GILLSHED” is still progressing, but somewhat slowly, much to the frustration of the Committee, say organisers.
‘A very active and keen Committee has been elected, and they have looked in to a lot of legal conditions, health and safety conditions, and many more, but to date, still have not been able to arrive at a suitable agreement, that would provide the necessary, suitable premises, for this community amenity, but rest assured, we are trying very hard,’ said a spokesperson.
‘We have received some financial support from Gillingham Council, and other benefactors, plus some membership subscriptions are starting to come in.’
The committee asks if anyone has a barn/large shed, in the Gillingham area, that they may be prepared to rent out, or anybody that may be prepared to invest in the scheme, please could they get in touch with: pajcwc@btinternet.com
A Men’s Shed is a place for men (mostly, but not exclusively) who are retired, lonely, or at ‘a loose end’ to pursue practical interests at leisure, and to practice skills and enjoy making and mending.
They’re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, promoting health and well-being, and enjoying life to the full, and perhaps also giving wives and carers some relief. It is hoped such a project may help people living with early stages of dementia. It is not a cure, but possibly a slowing down of the disease, re-engaging the brain, or just chatting with others.
