The Post Office is refusing to give reasons why its High Street branch in Gillingham has been abruptly and temporarily closed since 14 June.

All that a spokesperson has said is that it only closes branches in this way when ‘warranted’.

Gillingham & Shaftesbury News has tried to contact the owner of the franchise for the branch, Sally Graham, for comment.

The full statement from the Post Office reads: ‘We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of High Street Post Office, Gillingham since Friday 14 June.

‘We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services. We would like to reassure customers that the decision to suspend services at any of our branches is never taken lightly. We take very seriously any decision to temporarily close a branch, and will only do so when it is warranted.  We are working hard to restore services for the community as quickly as possible. The alternative branches in the area include Wyke, Motcombe and Bourton.’

The full addresses of the alternative branches are:

  • Wyke Post Office, Broad Robin Stores, Wyke, SP8 4PJ (Open Monday to Sunday: 6am – 11pm)

  • Motcombe Post Office, The Street, Motcombe, SP7 9PF (Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 9am – 1pm & 2 – 5pm; Wednesday: 9am – 1pm; Saturday: 9am – 12 noon).

  • Bourton Post Office, Bourton, SP8 5BD (Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 9am – 1pm & 2 – 5.30pm; Wednesday: 9am – 1pm; Saturday: 9am – 12.20pm).
