Gillingham School is to close on Friday 2 November after the tragic death of one of its teachers.

English and media teacher Ian Murray, who was in his 30s, died on the evening of 31 October.

Headteacher Paul Nicholson broke the news to pupils and parents in a statement on 1 November.

He said: ‘It is with deep regret that I have some very sad news to share with you today. Mr Ian Murray, one of our extremely talented English and Media teachers, suddenly passed away overnight.

‘Ian had worked at our school for 11 years and had provided exemplary service.’

Mr Nicholson said he had been working with the Dorset County Council Critical Incident Team and that the school was are treating this as an Emergency Incident. The school says that when they return on Monday professional help will be on hand for all students that require it.

The cause of Mr Murray’s death was not immediately clear.
