The Greener Gillingham group is setting up a Repair Café in the Slade Centre in the town and is looking for volunteers.

A Repair Café is a meeting place where skilled ‘fixers’ use their tools to help visitors make repairs to items that they bring in.

No charge is made but donations are very welcome. Visitors can also enjoy coffee and cake in the café.

‘We need fixers who would enjoy using their own tools to help with repairs,’ say organisers. ‘Could you replace a zip or restitch a broken seam? Could you fix a wobbly stool or a radio that’s no longer working? Can you do small repairs on items like kettles and toasters? Someone able to do simple bike maintenance would be very welcome as would general “fixers”.’

The Greener Group adds: ‘We also need friendly volunteers to help the session to run smoothly. Could you greet visitors and help to show them the ropes? Could you assist with the small amount of paperwork involved?’

REPAIR CAFÉ, Gillingham, Dorset will take place at the newly refurbished Slade Centre on The Square at the bottom of Gillingham High Street. It will open its doors for the first time on Saturday 25th April from 10am till 1pm as part of the Mayor’s Green Day.

REPAIR CAFÉ Gillingham, Dorset is a local project. It will join more than 2,000 Repair Cafés worldwide, organised and supported by the Repair Café Foundation.

* Greener Gillingham is a new community group whose aims are:
To promote  local ways to tread more lightly on the earth
To provide opportunities to learn about local and global environmental issues
To facilitate and organise events and activities to these ends
To act in partnership with the community, businesses, relevant groups and Local Authorities to achieve these aims

Its first activity was to set up the terracycle recycling point at the Community Office next to the library which operates twice a month on a Saturday morning (see poster below).
