Dorset policePolice have arrested a man from Devon after an incident on Rolls Bridge Lane in Gillingham on Thursday morning.

Witnesses described a ‘scary’ scene as the back window of a car had been smashed and a woman was attacked.

One said: ‘Many children were on the way to school at the time and you could see many were worried by the experience.’

In a statement the police said: ‘Dorset Police received a report at 7.55am on Thursday 14 October 2021 of two men next to a damaged car being abusive to passing motorists in Rolls Bridge Lane in Gillingham.

‘It was further reported that one of the men had assaulted a woman at the scene. The woman was reported to be known to the man.’

The police added: ‘Officers arrived and a 29-year-old man from Axminster in Devon was arrested on suspicion of assault. A hammer was also located in the vehicle and the man was further arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, as well as criminal damage and driving whilst unfit through drink.’
