The youngest member of North Dorset District Council’s Conservative cabinet has now become the youngest mayor of Shaftesbury and chairman of Shaftesbury Town Council.
Piers Brown, 23, was last night, 1 May, elected to be mayor of Shaftesbury for 2018-19 without a challenge. Councillor Lester Taylor, a leading UKIP activist, was elected deputy mayor, also without opposition.
It is the first time both mayor and deputy have been openly party political members of a council that prides itself on non-partisan politics.
Both men will serve until the elections for a new town council in May 2019 when both are also expected to seek election for their respective parties to the new unitary authority for rural Dorset.
