Cai My name is Cai and I am a Year 12 student at Gillingham School.

This July, I will be taking part in a volunteering trip to Zanzibar in Tanzania that has been organised by the charity African Adventures. This trip will take place between 15 July – 24 July and I will be going with around 40 other students from Gillingham School.

During my time there, I will be working with the help of experts and other volunteers to teach lessons and build educational facilities for primary school children in deprived communities. In these communities, many families get by on just 75p a day, and the schools in the area are understaffed, where in some cases one teacher is responsible for one hundred students. This means that it is difficult for individual students to get the one-on-one help they need with their learning.

Our aim is to help provide this extra level of support to these schools and to aid in any construction projects to improve their facilities; to give children in this area the education they deserve.

To fundraise the £2000 needed for this, I have decided to take on a 10km swimming challenge on 24 March at Riversmeet, Gillingham. I chose this distance because it is known as a ‘swimming marathon’.

If you would be willing to support my fundraising and sponsor my swim, please visit my gofundme page (https://gofund.me/1b134ac5) – which can also be found on my Instagram @cai_zanzibar2023 – where any donations will be greatly welcomed.

By volunteering, I hope I can make a positive difference to the lives of those in poverty and gain an insight into how they live day-to-day. I am very grateful for this opportunity, and any donations would be really appreciated.
