Wiltshire Police is urging homeowners across the county to be vigilant and ensure any homes – including those currently undergoing repairs – are secure following a number of reports of burglary.

‘We believe criminals may be targeting empty premises including those currently undergoing repairs and renovations, or holiday homes which are currently sitting empty,’ said a spokesperson.

Between 8pm on April 11 and 1.30pm on April 13, a window of an empty property in Highworth Road, Swindon, was smashed and an untidy search was carried out inside.

In a similar incident, an address in Savernake Street, Old Town, Swindon, was broken into – the lock on the front door was smashed off and the door was left wide open. The incident was reported on Monday after a neighbour reported concerns.

Detective Superintendent Chris Hanson said: ‘Other than key workers, most people are currently at home for the majority of the day so we believe criminals may be looking specifically for homes that appear to be empty – this could be because they are currently being renovated, they may be second homes or holiday homes.

‘If this relates to you, please ensure these homes are left secure and any valuables, such as power tools are removed.  I’d also urge neighbours to be vigilant – if you see any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, report it to 101 or 999 if you believe a crime is in progress.’
