Also present was Maisie Trim, aged 5, from Wyke Primary School, who won the competition to design this year’s programme cover.

‘Her fabulous design depicts a steam engine many of which can be seen in the Steam Cavalcade ahead of the Grand Illuminated Procession on Saturday night,’ said Carnival chairperson Mary Bailey.

‘The Crowning Ceremony was held at the Carnival Concert with Gillingham Imperial Silver Band playing a wide variety of pieces culminating with a “Last Night of the Proms” selection,’ she added.

The event took place on 27 September at Gillingham’s Methodist Church. The band was conducted by its musical director James Bennett.
