Gillingham Town Council says it is ‘extremely proud’ after it was announced that it has been awarded Gold Quality Status by the National Association of Local Councils.

Across the UK there are approximately 10,000 parish and town councils and only 54 of these hold the coveted Gold Quality standard under the Local Council Award Scheme.

This prestigious award recognises authorities that demonstrate ‘excellence in governance, community leadership and council development’, says the council. The Gold Award is the highest level of achievement in the Local Council Award Scheme, reserved for councils at the forefront of best practice and committed to continuous improvement. It recognises strong leadership, effective planning and a ‘clear commitment to serving the community well’.

On Friday 23 October 2026 the award was formally presented to the council by North Dorset MP Simon Hoare, who said: ‘As a former councillor and local government minister I know all too well the massive effort that is needed to secure Gold. It’s great news and recognition for the Town Council and all of the residents of Gillingham.’

Mayor of Gillingham, Councillor Donna Toye, said: ‘The award reflects the hard work and dedication of staff, councillors and volunteers in serving our residents and supporting the town.’

Town Clerk, Julie Hawkins, said: ‘We are delighted to receive this recognition from NALC and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the incredible team at Gillingham Town Council for their hard work and commitment to our community.’
