gym fitGet active and move more! This is the advice from staff at Gillingham Surgery who know how important it is to be physically active. It’s the new wonder drug!

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) were so impressed by the commitment of staff to move more and encourage their patients to do the same that the surgery can now call itself an ‘Active Practice’ This makes it the only practice in north Dorset with this accolade and one of only five in Dorset.

As we live longer it is important to remain physically active throughout our lives. Being physically active reduces the onset of long-term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart conditions and high blood pressure. Being active also helps our mental health. The more people that get active the healthier and happier our community will become.

Dr Kathryn Mounde, Clinical Director, said: ‘We’re delighted to be nominated as an Active Practice which supports our staff and patients to become more active.’

RiversMeet – the local community-owned leisure centre – hosts a variety of exercise classes and activities for all. It has long opening hours and friendly staff are always keen to support anyone to become more active and lead a healthier lifestyle.Gillingham Surgery Medical Practice

For those looking for more encouragement, RiversMeet has developed a Doctors Referral Scheme – a low-cost membership to access exercises classes, the gym and swimming pool. Those who take up this membership will be given an induction programme and regular support.

If you are interested in a doctor’s referral, please speak to the social prescribing team at Gillingham Medical Practice to process your referral on tel: 01747 834337or email: gillingham.socialprescribing@nhs.net

Lynsey Pledger, Fitness Manager and GP Referral Coordinator at RiversMeet said: ‘We love to welcome patients into the centre on the GP Referral scheme and to see the improvement that regular exercise can make to their wellbeing.

Gillingham is fortunate to have access to well-maintained open spaces, an urban orienteering trail, outside gyms and several playgrounds. The countryside is on our doorstep too, a place where many of us can relax and enjoy the fresh air.
