The reading bench provided by Taylor Wimpey for Gillingham Primary School.

Gillingham Primary School has received a reading bench beautifully crafted by apprentices from Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties. The bench was made as part of the apprentices’ work at Taylor Wimpey’s Gillingham Lakes development in Gillingham.

The school furniture was donated as part of the housebuilder calls its ‘ongoing commitment to giving back to the community surrounding its developments’. They have been installed at the school to create a ‘comfortable space for pupils to sit down and read’.

Sue Preston, headteacher at Gillingham Primary School, said: ‘We’re delighted to receive the kind donation of a reading bench for our school. Taylor Wimpey’s apprentices worked with a specific design to create a bespoke piece of furniture to fit a previously unloved corner.

‘Stocked out with books and comfy cushions, the children love snuggling up to read a book at various points throughout the day.’

Roz Wells, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties, said: ‘We’re pleased that the pupils at Gillingham Primary School are enjoying their reading benches and we hope these donations will encourage a love for reading. This was also a great opportunity for our apprentices to put their carpentry skills to the test while helping out the community.’
