St Mary the Virgin church in Gillingham has launched an appeal for funds as it faces a bill of over £350,000 for repairs to the roof.
The passage of time and the stormy weather experienced in recent years have resulted in numerous leaks which need to be fixed as soon as possible before things deteriorate further, say the church authorities.

These leaks have caused staining which is unsightly and makes the building unpleasant to use as well as damp, causing further deterioration, they say.
The work is going to be divided into two phases, with the first – focusing on the slate roofs on the nave, aisles, porches and tower – going ahead this spring costing about £45,000.
The second phase will be much more expensive as the whole roof at the east end of the building is coming towards the end of its life and needs to be replaced. This has been estimated by the architect to cost over £300,000, and cannot start until funds have been raised.
Tom Wickson, a church warden, explained: ‘Neither the central church nor the government have any grant schemes for local churches, so we will be applying for funds to various bodies. They will be happier to support us if we have already raised some money from our own resources.’
St Mary’s is Gillingham’s only Grade 1 Listed Building and has stood in the town since the early 14th century.

‘It’s our task at this point in time to repair the building and keep it in good order for future generations,’ Tom Wickson added.
‘We’re optimistic that the cost can be met and we shall be able to raise enough to maintain this important public space for the town. It’s a storehouse of community history and memories. Please help us if you can.’
